Assault on Wife

Mexborough Miner Gaoled For inflicting grievous bodily harm on his wife, George Henry Bright (44), miner, of Mexborough, was at Doncaster West Riding Police Court on Tuesday sent to prison for six months. He pleaded guilty.

Supt. Walker said that at 10 45 p.m. on Sunday, Bright returned home apparently the worse for drink, and was aggressive about his wife going to work. There was a quarrel, and he insisted that she should not go to work on the following day. He then attacked her with his fists, and while she was down kicked her in the back.

Mrs. Bright suffered severe bruises on her eye, lip and spine. Bright said he had extreme provocation. There was no need for her to go out to work. He alleged that she hit him with a pot of boiling water, scalding his neck. Mrs. Bright said she hit him in self defence.

Bright said he was sorry, and was willing to accept the consequences.
