Assault Case Dismissed.

Jesse Wheelding, miner, Mexboro’, was charged with assaulting Maria Goodman, of the same town, on 28th ult.

Complainant said the defendant first struck her on the previous Friday week, about a quarter to seven in the evening, in High Street. There was no reason for the assault, as witness had never spoken to him.

Defendant denied striking complainant, and said he merely pushed her off the causeway.

Thomas Goodman, father of complainant, said he was working at the glass works on the evening in question, when word was brought to him that his daughter had been assaulted. He at once went home, and when he reached there he found his daughter’s lip bleeding.

Defendant said at the time he was talking to another man; when complainant said “Come on, young fellow, or you’ll get a smack in the mouth.”

She afterwards gave him a dig in the ribs, and he merely “shoved” her off the causeway. It was not true that he struck her.

The case was dismissed.
