Assault at Mexboro’

Aaron Fairburn, carter, of Mexboro’ was summoned by Frank Hepworth for assault at Mexboro’ on the 21st May.

Mr. W. Baddiley appeared for the complainant and stated that the complainant was a clerk for Mr. White at the flour mills. Mexboro’, and the defendant was until recently a carter in his employ. A fortnight ago there was some very important work going on at the mill, some rollers having to go away to the engineers at Retford.

The complainant asked the defendant to stay and and take the rollers to the station. This the defendant point blank refused to do, and in consequence he gave the defendant a week’s notice.

One day in the next week the man saw the complainant, and, without any provocation whatever, struck him in the mouth, and they got struggling on the ground together. A man named Lee came up and parted them. The same night the defendant wanted to fight him again, and threatened what he would do at him.

What the complainant only wanted was protection and asked if the court would bound the defendant over.

The complainant and Albert Edward Lee gave evidence, and the defendant, who did not appear, was ordered to appear the following week in order to be bound over in the sum of £5 for six months.
