” Army ” Officers in the Making
Mexborough Cadets for Training
The Mexboro’ Corps of the Salvation Army are sending four members next week to the William Booth Training College, London, as candidates for commissions.
In the last fifty years the Mexboro’ Corps has had a number of young people accepted, some of whom are now well known officers.
The four candidates are Miss Ethel May Kennedy Miss Eunice Downing, Evangeline Stunnell, Miss Downing, and Mr. John Wm. Wigley.
Miss Kennedy is a daughter of Bandmaster and Mrs. Kennedy, of Cowper Road, and has been connected with the local Corps since childhood. She and Miss Downing have been presented each with a book and dressing gown by the Corps Cadets.
Miss Stunnell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Stunnell, Dolcliffe Road, has also been connected with the Corps since childhood, and was a member of the choir until four years ago, when she left for Halifax and became associated with the Corps there. She has been a Corps Cadet for some years. On leaving Halifax last week-end, she was presented with a Bible and wallet of notes. She has also received a book from the Mexboro’ Corps Cadets.
Miss Downing, who resides with her aunt, Mrs. J. Downing, Hartley Street, became associated with the Salvation Army about ten years ago, and immediately became a prominent member of the choir and Young People’s Movement. Mr. Wigley, a son of Mr and Mrs. J. W. Wigley, of Don View, has been a member of the Salvation Army Band for ten years. His colleagues have presented him with a travelling trunk and the Corps Cadets a book.
Each candidate has had the additional gift of travelling expenses to London from the Corps members. Farewell services will be held at the Army Hall on Sunday.
