Killed In Africa
Mexborough R.A.F. Sergeant Sergt.
George Kenneth Biggins (21), youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Biggins, of 50, Market Street, who has been reported killed in action in North Africa, is believed to be the first Mexborough casualty in the war with Italy. Mr. and Mrs. Biggins were informed their son’s death on Monday.
Sergt. Biggins has made marked progress since joining the R.A.F. at the age of 16 ½ . After only 16 months training he passed out as a Leading Aircraftman (First Class), gaining his proficiency badges as a wireless operator and gunner. Two years ago he was drafted out East and was promoted to the rank of Corporal before he was 20.
It was only when they received the telegram from the Air Ministry that Mr. and Mrs. Biggins learned that their son had been made a Sergeant. Sergt. Biggins was educated at Mexborough Secondary School and was a patrol leader of the 1st Mexborough Boy Scouts. He regularly attended Mexborough Parish Church. His parents have received numerous letters of sympathy , in their loss from many friends, to whom they are grateful. They sent Sergt. Biggins a copy of the “South Yorkshire Times” every week.
