Local boundaries are under review: the whole system of our local administration is under the process of re-casting. A year or two hence and we shall have ceased to wonder—and grumble at the revolutionary changes which nave passed almost unnoticed under our noses.

But whatever Muddleton in the-Slush or the rural district of Somewhere-cum-Somewhere Else may have become under the new regime, it may be taken for granted that Mexborough will remain Mexborough.

The point is that while local governors are tinkering with boundaries and rateable values, sorting out the bundle of local prejudices and parochialisms, Mexborough has taken already the practical steps which ensure its future whatever County Hall or the name to something ending in -borough (which would the natural outcome to any thinking Mexboro-ite) and shift the present boundaries another inch or two across the ordnance survey; but you will not change the heart of Mexborough, which is sound in spite of storm, fire and flood.

This Don Valley Shopping Centre stands foursquare to every wind that blows and every torrent that flows, and it will be not only the attractions of Rag jollifications that will fill its narrow but business-like streets this week-end as usual. People conic to Mexborough as often as they can: not with that sigh that means. – Well, I suppose it’s got to be done, – but readily, because they are glad to come. At Mexborough thee find a livelier air, a kindlier folk, a readier and more economical market in which to fulfil their week’s requirements. Business and pleasure combined draw folk as if by powerful magnet to much-maligned and still-smiling and unperturbed Mexborough. It may be “Donborough.” or some “-opolis” to-morrow; but the elements that make for Mexborough’s present outstanding importance among coalfield Shopping Centres will remain. They will merely have increased in degree.
