A Sunday Scene at Bolton

James Ramsdell, labourer, Swinton, and John Bardwell, bricklayer, Mexborough, were charged with having been drunk at Bolton.

P.c. Brown proved the case. He said that on Sunday, the 5th inst., at 3.50 in the afternoon, he was on the highway in the village, and found the two lying helplessly drunk on the side of the road. They were asleep. He got hold of Ramsden and shook him, and he got upon his feet but could scarcely stand. He gave his name and address, and then left staggering on his way to Swinton.

He bad to shake Bardwell for about two minutes, before he awoke. He then said, “Who the b— b— are you? ” and witness satisfied him on that point. The man then twice got upon his feet but fell to the ground each time. He assisted him to Mexborough.

Each defendant was fined 5s. and 8s. 3d. costs.
