Mexborough’s Top Score

Vain Work By Pantling And Heeley

 Mexborough 6, Heanor 0

Mexhoro’: Bromage ; Beaumont, Davis; Saxton, Sylvester; Hancock, Bramley, “Smith,” Shaw, Vollans.

Heanor: Heeley Potts, Liversidge; Simpson, Pantling, Reid; Marsh, Butler, Biddle, Tinsley, Glover.

But for the atrocious conditions Heanor’s bit of good luck and fine goalkeeping by Heeley, Mexboro’ would certainly have been top scorers of the day on Saturday.

The Hampden Road ground was a mass of mud and, water and the match went on between showers of mud and a few waterfalls. Mexborough were the more aggressive throughout, but it was only in the second half that the forwards were effective in front of goal. The inside forwards played well together and received good support from the halves; but it was in the defence that Mexboro’ excelled. In Beaumont and Davis they had two fine defenders, specially Beaumont, who scored perhaps the best goal of the day.

The Second half was only a minute old when Bramley was brought down about six yards outside the penalty area. Beaumont took the kick and the ball went into the corner of the net.

Heanor were well served at centre-half by Pantling, the former Sheffield United player. He and Heeley were the outstanding men of the day. Pantling checked many Mexboro’ attacks and whenever he was wanted in a Heanor attack he was there. Had it not been for the splendid work of Beaumont and Davis he would have been very dangerous. Saxton was not quite as happy as usual.

Heanor played as good football as Mexboro’ in the first half but in the second half they could not resist the virile Mex-boro’ attack. Heeley was on the move during practically the whole of the half and did well.

SHAW scored the first goal and the other goals in the second half were scored by .SHAW, BEAUMONT, BRAMLEY, HANCOCK and the anonymous centre-forward.
