67 Years Working in the Mine

August 1927

Mexborough and Swinton Times August 19, 1927

Mr Cyrus Scofield, of Ferndale house, Hallgate, Mexborough has just concluded 67 years work in the mine.

Mr Schofield was born at Breighton near Selby, in 1848, and the age of 11 was brought by his parents to Waterloo near Leeds. A year later he signed on at the Waterloo colliery as a donkey driver, and from that lowly position he had risen to be assistant under manager.

After 10 years at the Waterloo colliery he commenced work on the old North Eastern Railway as a fireman. Nine months later, at Leeds, he took up work on the old Lancashire Railway.

However, he returned to coal mining and went as a sinker at the Woodlesford colliery near Normanton; then Lofthouse Colliery, and finally came to Denaby Main as a shaft repairer, when Mr Warburton was manager.

By homestudy Mr Schofield passed examinations, and received a position as deputy at Denaby Main. For the last 10 years has been assistant under manager, retiring on August 9, the anniversary of the day, 60 years before when he first descended a mine.

Mr Schofield is wonderfully active for his years and says he still feels a young man during his long service at the Denaby Colliery.  He career ended with the esteem and respect of the whole of the staff, and Mr W H Chambers held him in particularly high regard.
