Land Gift to Mexborough

August 1927

Mexborough and Swinton Times August 19, 1927

A corner of the old Mexborough brickyard. This land, over 4 acres in extent, has been offered to the Mexborough Urban District Council by the owner, Councillor Robert Fowler, as a gift to the town.

The offer has been accepted, the land will be fenced and adapted for use as a public playground. A portion of the ground has already been levelled by Mr Fowler at his own expense with this object in view. The ground lends itself naturally to the purpose, and is conveniently situated for the west end of the town, which is densely populated and is no recreation centre.

Mr Fowler is interested in the national playing fields movement, and this is his contribution to it.

As he says: “There is no place where children from Main Street, High Street and the west end of Mexborough can play except here. The have played on this ground for years, still want to do so. This is an overcrowded district, and if the Council make a playing field here the children can get some fresh air, and they can reach it without crossing a main road.”
