Former Mexborough Couple’s Golden Wedding
Mr & Mrs W. Baldwin
Their old friends in the Mexborough district will be delighted to hear that Mr and Mrs Wilson Baldwin, who used to live in Highwood Road, Mexborough, and who now live at Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. celebrated their Golden Wedding on Friday.
Mr Wilson Baldwin is the first son of the late Mr and Mrs R Baldwin, and was born at Caldecote, Uppinghmam, Bucks, on February 13, 1863. He lived in that town until the death of his father in 1879, and then he went to live with one of his sisters in Rotherham.
He was on “HMS Invincible,” which was then serving with the Mediterranean fleet, and he was on that ship during the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882, during the Egyptian war. Mr Baldwin took his discharge in December 21, 1885 and returned to civilian life.
During his civil life in England, Mr Baldwin had four different positions; the first two were with the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company as a machine operator and porter. He later took employment at Mexborough and lastly worked for the Wath Main and Manvers Main Collieries where he stayed for over 25 years, until 1925 he and his wife left for Detroit, Michigan.
He thinks that their removal to America has lengthened their lives, and is proud of the fact that he has no grey hairs, although he is nearly 74. Mrs Bowen, was the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Berry, of Bath, is now 76, she too is very active.
Of their four children Robert is now an attorney in Detroit, Frederick is in a motor works, Leonard lives at Langley Mill Notts, but the daughter, Florence Edna Ouida, was the wife of Mr Chance, 51, Highwood Road, died about 18 months ago.
