Tribute to Ald. G. Schofield
New Technical School to Bear His Name
Educational Work Recognised
A signal honour has, we understand, been conferred upon Alderman George Schofield, of Park Road, Mexborough, the West Riding Education Committee having decided, as a tribute to his educational services, to call the new Technical Institute on Park Road, now in course of erection, the “Schofield Technical Institute.”
Alderman Schofield has been Chairman of the Managers of the present Technical Institute for 17 years and he has already been appointed Chairman of the Managers of the new Institute. He was for many years on the Mexborough Urban Council, and has been on the County Council since 1922. Alderman Schofield is a Governor of the Secondary School, a member of the Hospital Management Board, and secretary of the Old Folk’s Treat Committee.
Imposing Building.
The new Technical Institute which, it is hoped, will be completed in August, promises to be a building as imposing as the Mexborough Secondary School. It is hoped that it will cater for at least 500 scholars and the site is admirably suited to the purpose for which it has been used.
The main part of the building is already complete with the exception of certain interior fittings and finishing and it constitutes a notable landmark easily discernible from the Western approaches to the town.
The front of the building, two storeys high and east and west single-storey wings are joined on the north by another corridor with flanking class-rooms, leaving what will be a pleasant Quadrangle in the centre. A feature of the building is the spacious gymnasium and assembly hall which is being added to the west wing.
A large stage has been provided so that the hall will be ideal for social and dramatic functions, in addition to being available for use as a gymnasium.
