10 Year Old Mexborough Girl Rider Has Ambition to be Showjumper
10 years old Jane Hemingway is mad keen on horses, and would like to be a showjumper. Every day she exercises her pony, “Trigger” – and since she started riding has won 16 rosettes in jumping competitions.
Jane’s biggest triumph so far, however, came on Sunday week when she came second in the under 15 years class – two stages higher than her own class – in the Wentworth and District Pony Hunter Trials.
Her mother, Mrs Doreen Hemingway, said at her home “Forecourt,” 13, Park Road, Mexborough: “She first started riding last February. She has always been interested in horses – I think it runs in the family, because my husband used to use a horse and cart for our removal business before vans were introduced.”
Jane is a pupil at St John’s Church of England School Mexborough. She got her first pony, “Lucky” last February, and promptly joined Wentworth Pony Club.
On “Lucky” she won 15 rosettes – including four “firsts.” She has now changed to a bigger pony, “Trigger,” and last week was her first outing on the new pony.
Each night, she gets home from school, Jane takes “Trigger” out for daily exercise, then takes him back to the stable – across the road from Jane’s home – where her father, Mr Frank Hemingway, grooms the pony.
“She would like to be a showjumper,” said Mrs Hemingway, “but I think her main ambition is to be a schoolteacher.”
