Mexborough and Swinton Times May 4, 1918
Gnr. Walter Dakin
Royal Field Artillery
Gunner Dakin, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dakin, 26, Park road, Mexborough, was killed in action on April 9.
He was 19 years of age and had been serving since March, 1917.
He went to France only a few weeks before his death. Before enlistment he was employed at the Kilnhurst Steel Works. His parents have received from a comrade, Gnr. Harold Jacobs, a letter of which the following is an extract:
“I knew him personally, and considered myself one of his chums, being with him in training in England, and I left on the same draft. I was posted to the same battery, and the day before his death was on duty with him.
I saw him last on the night of the 8th. He was always very cheerful; he was, one of the best.
I deeply regret having lost such a chum.
Kindly accept my deepest sympathy with you your sad bereavement.”
