Some of the Local Election Candidates
CENTRAL WARD (One Seat)
Edwin Haigh (Labour)
A gateman, of 44.Maple Road has represented the Ward for nine years and was the chairman of the council 1965 – 66. He has lived in Mexborough for at least 15 years, has been a lifelong member ofthe Salvation Army and is a committee member of the of the Sunday School Union (Mexborough. Swinton and District).
He is a member of the Old People’s Welfare Co-ordinating Committee.
Alwyn Martin (31)
A computer site preparation engineer, of 34, Cemetery Road, Mexborough, is contesting his first election for the Citizens’ Association. Born at Roman Terrace. Mr. Martin attended Mexborough Schofield Technical School and Rotherham College of Technology, and is employed at Sheffield by a Hereford firm. Married with one child, Mr. Martin served two years National Service with the R.A.F.
EAST WARD (One Seat)
John Henry Gill (Lab.)
Mineworker, of 75, Clayfield View. Mexborough, has served for six years on the Council and was previously a member of Conisbrough Urban Council. For the past five years president of the Denaby Main N.U.M. branch. Mr. Gill served in France and Norway during World War II attached to the No 3 Commando Company.
Roy Booth (29),
Schoolteacher, of 17, Addison Road, Mexborough, is an Independent Socialist candidate. Born in Mexborough, Mr. Booth is a former Labour Party member and is contesting his second election. For seven years he has taught science and maths at Mexborough Secondary School and he attended Mexborough Grammar School and Borough Training College, Middlesex. Mr. Booth served two years with the Army Education Corps in Germany and is a former official of the National Association of Schoolmasters.
Harry Nettleton,
A retired mineworker and railway worker, of 35, Chaucer Road, Mexborough is the Citizens’ Association candidate. A lifelong Mexborough resident, Mr. Nettleton worked for 20 years at Yorkshire Main Colliery. Edlington, and later on the railways. He has been a member of the Territorial Army since 1930 and holds the Territorial Long Service Medal. He gained the Africa Star and Burma Star during World War 11 service.
North WARD (One Seat)
John C. Willetts
Headmaster, of 157, Adwick Road, Mexborough defends his seat for the Mexboro’ Citizens’ Association, of which he was the founder. Headmaster at Wath Victoria Junior School, Mr. Willetts has represented the Ward for 21 years. He has held several important posts with the National Union of Teachers, including the presidency of the West Yorkshire County Association, and chairmanship of the West Riding Association. Locally he has served for many years as secretary and president of the Mexborough Association.
John Harry Chambers
Transport clerk, of 38, Lower Dolcliffe Road, Mexborough is the Labour candidate. Locally born, he is a member of a well-known family which had business interests in Mexborough. He served with the Coldstream Guards as a senior N.C.O. in France and the Middle East in World War 11. Mr. Chambers is a shop steward of the Transport and Salaried Stalls’ Association, and is also chairman-elect of the Doncaster. Barnsley and Worksop branches of the British Road Services Joint Negotiating Committee.
