Missing Man From Mexborough – Found Drowned.
An Open Verdict on a Mexborough Glass-Worker.
A verdict of Found drowned ” was returned yesterday at an inquest by Mr. Frank Allen, at Mexborough, on Edward Ramsden (44), widower, a works hands, of Wellington Street, Mexborough. Ramsden left home to go to his work on December 7th and after calling at the Post Office for letters for his employers, disappeared.
His body was recovered from the canal at Mexborough on Wednesday.
Richard Hebden, of 43, Belmont Street, said he saw Ramsden on December 7th near the Post Office. He had just collected letters and was looking quite well.
Mrs. Elizabeth Ramsden, mother of the deceased, said that he had lived with her since the death of his wife, 14 years ago. He had no business worries or financial troubles, and was in the best of health the night before he left home. He suffered occasionally from fits, owing to having been gassed at the Denaby Colliery 14 years ago.
Herbert Jacques, boiler washer of 48, Garden Road, Mexborough, said he was returning from work 2.15 yesterday when he saw the body floating in the canal. He gave information to the ‘police.
Police-constable Forsyth said when he recovered the body he found on it two letters and two postcards, and cheque worth £119 18s. 2d. made out to Mr. White.
Mr. Cecil W. White, who is in charge of Waddington Bros. Glass Works, said that Ramsden was employed there as a glass labourer. He gave the deceased a very good character.
