Soldier – Hood C. – Died Of Wounds And Gas Poisoning

September 1917

Mexborough and Swinton Times September 29, 1917

Private C Hood
York and Lancaster

Private Hood, 2 Main Street Mexborough, has died of wounds and gas shell poisoning.

He was single, aged 19, and had been serving since August 1915.

Before enlistment he was employed by his father, who is a painter and decorator.

The following sympathetic message has been received from the sister in Charge of the hospital at which Private Hood died:

“it is with great regret that I confirmed the sad news of the death of your son in this Hospital September 12.

He was admitted the same day suffering from shell gas poisoning, and was so ill there was no chance of his recovery, and he died within a few hours.

Everything possible was done to make the end peaceful, and he did not suffer much pain.

He did not speak of anyone at home, and never seem to realise how ill he was.”
