She Was Mexborough’s Oldest Resident
After a very short illness Mrs Florence Platt, Mexborough’s oldest resident died at her home on Tuesday morning.
Well known for her devotion to Mexborough Bank St, Methodist Church and as a teacher for a considerable number of years, she would have been 98 on April 19.
Mrs Platt leaves five sons, one of whom lives in Australia, and two daughters. A sixth son was killed in the war.
There are also six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.
She lived with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Tom Venables, at 115, Adwick Rd, Mexborough, and even at her great age she was a regular attender at Bank Street. She was also keen an her almost daily walk, and took one only two days before she became ill.
Born in Mexborough, the daughter of a schoolteacher, she herself went into teaching before she was married and during the First World War she went back to teaching (at Dolcliffe Road Junior School).
Her husband, a joiner and undertaker, died 20 years ago.
She was extremely fond of music, and apart from playing and teaching the piano, she had been a member of several choral societies, including Wath and Denaby.
Three years ago she laid the foundation stone of the new school rooms of Bank St, Methodist Church.
