Yorkshire Miners in Salonika

This is a group of miners photographed in an interval of their labours.

They are Yorkshiremen and are serving with the Salonika forces.

On the right of the back row is pioneer Arthur Morris (Royal Engineers), who enlisted two years ago at the age of 16. He is a son of Mr Alfred Morris, of 2 Albert Place, Dolciffe Road, Mexborough, has been serving overseas for 12 months.

Before enlistment he worked first at Manvers Main and then at Hemsworth.

His brother Corporal Edward Morris, of the Dublin Fusiliers, was a miner in the Durham district when the war broke out. He immediately enlisted and was badly wounded in Gallipoli, part of his temple being shot away. He recorded went to France, when he was captured by the Germans on the first day of the Somme offensive, July 1, 1916. He has been in German ever since, and his latest letter home reports that he is “A1”.

He is 24 years of age
