Busy Naval Career
Mexborough Wrestler and the Fleet
Seaman Horace Morton, Royal Navy
Seaman Horace Morton, R.N. of Mexborough, well-known in local athletic circles as a wrestler of uncommon strength and ability, has been serving in the Navy almost throughout the war, and we have just received from him a letter in which he details some of his experiences.
He commenced his service as a rating of HMS Drake, and took part in important operations in the early days of the war.. He left the Drake to undergo an operation for appendicitis and later was transferred to Liverpool.
Subsequently he saw a good deal service in the Adriatic, and assisted in the evacuation of the Serbian and Montenegrin troops and their conveyance from Albania to the Greek islands. His ship escorted the Royal Families of Montenegro and Serbia to Italy.
Seaman Morton was at that time physical training instructor in the vessel to which he was attached. He was sent to Malta to wait a passage to the East.
Now he is about to return to England and is looking forward eagerly to rejoining his family after a separation of two years and seven months.
Here seen a good deal service in Egypt, Malta and Port Said, and has been engaged in the convoying of troops. He is also seen service in India and along the coast of Asia Minor, where he has taken part in operations against Turkish forces.
He assures us that the Navy has done and is doing immensely more than it is publicly credited with.
