Private Lees
(York and Lancaster)
of 18 Wragby Row, Wath Road, Mexborough was killed in action in France on April 12.
His parents have received the following letter from Lt G/C Fitzherbert:
“It is with the deepest regret that I write to inform you of the death of private Lees. He volunteered to form part of a party to raid the German trenches. This took place on the night of the 12th, and you will be proud to hear that he distinguished himself by being one of the first to get through the German wire.
He was just behind me when a German officer shot him. Death was instantaneous.
He was one of my best men; always cheery and willing, and I feel his loss very much personally.
You will be glad to hear that the next day this battalion advance over 2700 yards into the German trenches, and as the raid was part of the scheme of attack, private Lees gave his life that others might advance. His body had been recovered and has been buried at —–. I could not write before, as we have been continuously advancing these last five days. Hoping you will find some consolation in the news of his gallant action.”
