Commission for Mexborough Teacher
Corporal WH Popple (R.G.A.)
of Ferryboat Lane, Mexborough, son of Mr A Popple, the town librarian, returned from France in order to train for a commission.
Mr Popple enlisted in the Siege Artillery last May, and has been in France about eight months.
He was formally a certified assistant on the staff of the Central Senior School, and was a baritone vocalist of more than local reputation. He was a leading member of the late Mexborough Operatic Society.
He was until a few years ago a well-known and popular local footballer, and played fullback variously for Mexborough Town, Goole Town and Rawmarsh Albion.
