Mexborough have indeed struck a patch of the most atrocious misfortune. As if the new trouble which is incapacitated Tommy Harrison throughout the season, the suspension of Rob Hill, and the failure of several young recruits were being tried, were not enough, on Saturday came another serious stroke.

Teddy Ashton, who was to have played at Alfreton last Saturday, was seized with appendicitis. He is now in the Montagu hospital having had an operation. He is doing well but the club will naturally be without his services for the rest of the season.

Ashton is one of the “live wires” of the team and this ploy is one of the worst the club has suffered in this unlucky season.

It is a setback to the player himself, for several first-class clubs have been watching him, and he has just reached the age – 20 – and stage of development when he was right for transfers into the nursery of a big club for the final polish that makes a first class player.

He is another of the many fine footballers Kilnhurst have produced and is numerous admirers there and at Mexborough hope he will make a complete and speedy recovery and turnout again in better form than ever.
