Sapper Hackett V.C.
Memorial Fund Opened
An Appeal for Subscriptions

The public of Mexborough, we are convinced will show quickly, in a practical way, that they are eager to support the scheme to give a permanent memorial to Sapper Hackett, B.C., who has brought such honour in his native place.

The Mexborough Urban District Council have decided to promote a memorial fund, and under their auspices the fund will be administered.

An appeal is now made for subscriptions, large or small, and we believe that every inhabitant of the town will respond.

The honour of winning the Victoria Cross is greater now than ever before. Sapper Hackett is the first Mexborough man to win the VC and very possibly he will be the last, although all our gallant lads who are now fighting will not fail to carry out any duty they are asked to perform.

The full story of Hackett’s gallantry is told in another column. So also is the story told, by the pitch we publish, of sapper Hackett’s family, who are left to make the best of the misfortune which has come upon them.

The future breadwinner of the family lost his leg in an accident at Manvers Main Colliery. It is left to the Pensions Committee and a generous public to see that this family is amply, nay generously Provided for

We appeal to the liberality of the people of South Yorkshire for this worthy object.
