Sapper T. Best
(Royal Engineers)
Sapper Tom Best, of 56 York St, Mexborough, has been killed in action. His officer writes to the widow as follows:
“I deeply regret to inform you that your husband was killed on July 1. A stray shell burst among four men, who sat on the side of the trench some distance behind the firing line. His death was instantaneous.
He was a thoroughly reliable man and a steady soldier, and I offer you my deepest sympathy.
Sapper Best was an old campaigner, having fought through the Boer War with the yeomanry.”
