Smash Without Grab – A Mexborough Street Accident
Damage amounting to about £50 was done on Tuesday morning, when a lorry crashed into the shop window of David Haigh, Ltd., pawnbrokers, of Main Street. The street is under repair and, in consequence, traffic is disorganised.
The lorry, owned by Mr. G. W. Jepps, coal merchant, Mexborough, and driven by Edward Robinson, Harlington Road, Mexborough, with whom was Harry Jones, Hope Street, Mexborough, was travelling in the direction of Wath.
A pony and trap, coming from the opposite direction, suddenly bumped a raised portion of the road immediately on Robinson’s side. Robinson swerved to avoid a collision and the steering wheel locked and the hand accelerator opened fully. At the same time Robinson was flung across the cab. Before he could recover, the lorry had mounted the pavement, knocked the side off an electric power box, and crashed into the pawnbroker’s window, which was filled with crockery, chairs, fenders and furniture.
These were smashed and flung across the place. The front of the lorry was badly damaged, tyres being burst, and a wing and the radiator buckled. Before it could be moved new wheels had to be fitted. The men in the lorry escaped injury.
