Wath Take Up the Challenge

Wath accepted a sporting declaration by Rockingham (159 for 6 wickets), at Wath, and knocked off the runs (160 for 5 wickets), with 15 minutes to spare. C. Pearce (14), J. Ivill (41), and J. Moxon gave Rockingham a useful, if steady, start, 87 being on the board when the second wicket fell. Three wickets then fell at 98, but Moxon, who stayed on to score 51 not out, and L. Adams (23) took the score to 159. Beecham (3 for 42) and Sage (2 for 21), were the most successful bowlers. A third wicket stand of 72 by D. Brooke (37) and S. Ellis, who went on to score 43, gave Wath good hopes, but it was a forceful 37 not out by K. Phillips, who helped Ellis to add 60 for the fifth wicket, which beat the clock.

Mexborough on Top at Elsecar

Mexborough secured a well deserved victory over Elsecar at the Armroyd Lane ground on Saturday, due to excellent fielding and a commendable batting combination by A. Auty and T. Hargreaves. Batting first Elsecar had their first four batsmen caught. Fred Wrightson with 21 was Elsecar’s highest scorer in a total of 99. Mexborough reached 101 for the loss of four wickets, Auty scoring 35 and Hargreaves 39.

Other Matches

Sheffield United, who are playing friendly games with league clubs, visited Denaby on Saturday. Denaby’s youthful pair, Leary (15) and Ellis (34), put on nearly half the total of 97. Other scorers were Brown 12, Vickers 11 and Rossington 10.

Out of Sheffield United’s total of 71, Spicer made 37. For Sheffield, Oswald had 3 for 31 and Stainrod 4 for 8; for Denaby, Wardle had 6 for 15 and Robinson 3 for 10.
