Another Away Defeat

(Boston 2, Mexboro’ 1)

Mexboro’ caught Boston on the top of their form on Saturday and suffered another away defeat, but only by a goal margin after a keen game. Boston opened impressively and in 15 minutes were a goal up through Fordham, their centre-forward, who crowned an excellent bout of passing. Mexboro’ replied strongly and in 10 minutes Ralph Burkinshaw equalised cleverly, hooking a corner kick from Kelsall to score a surprise goal. Ratcliffe got Boston’s second goal shortly before the interval, and this goal also resulted from a corner-kick. In the interim the Mexboro’ defence had some trying times, with Fordham a constant worry to Winstanley and Wilburn, who put in some good work. Mexboro’ improved after the interval and pl d ay was faster. In one short but sharp attack by Boston, Wilkinson did distinguished work, saving half a dozen close range shots in quick succession. It was give-and-take to the end, with Mexboro’ struggling hard but vainly for the equaliser. Rogers at outside-right bore out the promise shown at Hampden Road and was prominent throughout in the Mexboro’ attack. He made good use of the chances given him and made some accurate centres. A little lack of understanding among the Mexboro’ forwards was probably the main cause of their defeat.
