Sunday Gambling at Conisboro’ and Mexboro’
No less than 45 charges were made against boys and men for gaming with dice and coin tossing on Sunday, the 8th inst.
Two defendants were from Conisboro’, Z. Ashton, miner, and Wm. Thompson, labourer, being fined 5s. and 2s. 6d. respectively.
Eight were from Denaby, the following fines being inflicted: William Fearn, 7s. 6d.; George Higgins, 7s. 6d.; Harry Mack, 5s.; Joseph Handley, 5s. and costs; Patrick Higgins, 5s.; Albert Catterall, 2s. 6d.; Elijah Stonehouse, 2s. 6d.
Dennis Hessey, of Swinton, was fined 2s. 6d., and the other defendants, all from Mexboro’, were fined as follows: Thomas Logan, 5s.; John Thomas Birell, 10s.; James Hague, 5s.; Thomas Taylor, 20s. including costs; and Thomas Potts, 20s. including costs.
The Mexboro’ cases were discovered by P.C. Hudson and Inspector Watson in quick succession, hauls being made at 3.30 p.m. in Creswick Square, 3.35 in Simpson Place, and 4.15 on the Leech, the officers’ walk being most fruitful.
