Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Monday 12 October 1903
Newark 1 Denaby United 0
An exciting and hard-fought game was witnessed at Newark, when Denaby United visited the Trent-side town. Both sides were strongly represented and Mr. Kingscott, the well-known referee, kept the players well in hand.
The Newark forward line was conspicuous throughout, but the shooting was too lofty. Many shots went over the bar, whilst others were magnificently kept out by Massey, the old Wednesday custodian, who gave a really brilliant exhibition in goal.
The home defence was very safe and clean. The outstanding features of the game were the dashing attack of the Newark forwards, and the no less stubborn and fine defence of the Denaby backs and goalkeeper. Massey was beaten once, but he could not be blamed for that.
