Beaumont’s New Record

Willis Beaumont, captain of Mexboro’ Olympia, has, during the last two weeks, established two new records. In the Midland Counties’ Knock-out Competition he now holds the individual record, having scored 10 goals in the first two rounds, while in the Lancashire Cup he broke all records by scoring eight goals in the game against Manchester Stars on Friday.

Beaumont has a record which no doubt is without comparison in the rink hockey world. Since his early ‘teens he has shown considerable interest in this sport. W. Beaumont. As a boy he played with the old Mexboro’ Olympia team when a rink was in existence on the site now occupied by Mexboro’ Empire. In 1930, when the present rink was opened, he took the leading part in reviving the sport, and most of the young players now making names for themselves in the game have passed through his hands. These include Barron, Loveland, Thirkell, and the Cauwood brothers. The only thing he now requires to complete his memorable career is an international cap, and ere long that probably will come.

Olympia had little difficulty on Friday in dismissing Manchester Stars from the second round of the Lancashire Cup. The final score was 11-1 in Mexboro’s favour. Manchester came with an excellent record, but early in the game it was apparent that they were hopelessly outclassed. Reg. Johnson, at half-back, gave a brilliant display for Olympia, and it was mainly through his scheming that they had the opportunities for scoring. Beaumont had some excellent scoring practice and found the net on eight occasions. while other goals were by Barron (2) and R. Johnson.
