Exciting Finish At Rawmarsh

Mexboro’ featured in an exciting finish at Rawmarsh on Saturday. It was only in the last minute that White obtained Steel’s wicket to give them the victory.

Rain spoilt what would probably have been Rawmarsh’s best “gate” of the season and delayed the start for 45 minutes. Had Rawmarsh saved the game it would have been because of Mexboro’s “safety first” policy.

The visitors batted two and a half hours before declaring at 163 for nine, leaving Rawmarsh 90 minutes to bat. Rawmarsh were up against it from the beginning of their innings, having three wickets down for 14 runs. On a drying wicket they were unable to face the steady length of White and the faster bowling of Williams. It was unfortunate for Rawmarsh that the sun came out after tea, as the wicket was very easy paced at the close of Mexboro’s innings, but the effect of the roller and the sun caused a real “sticky” wicket. Only Mellor, the former Sheffield United player, stood up to the bowling with any confidence. He played a splendid fighting innings which might have saved the game for Rawmarsh. Not another batsman reached double figures. Extras accounted for 11 of the total and the remaining batsmen gathered only 21 runs.

Hukin, last week’s century-maker, had the misfortune to be run out before he had scored, a return from one of the Mexboro’ fielders hitting the stumps. For Mexboro’, Williams had the splendid analysis of 6 for 20 and White 3 for 13. A dour partnership between Tibbles and White retrieved a bad start for Mexboro’. They came together after Brown and Burkinshaw had been dismissed with the score at U. and stayed on until at 73 White placed his leg in front of a straight one from Steel which shot under his bat. Tibbles gave a chance behind the wicket when he had scored five, but otherwise played a sound innings which included a six off Goulder. After Tibbles had left at 78, Steel cleverly varied his bowling and three wickets quickly fell. Mexboro’, still short of the century with seven wickets down, were having to fight hard for runs, but Bowman played carefully to restore the position until he was out to a splendid catch by Mellor when trying to force the game. W. Dawson hit out lustily towards the end and was unbeaten at the close with 42, which included seven fours. For Rawmarsh, Ambler came out with the best analysis against his former colleagues, taking 3 for 18. Steel obtained 3 for 33 and Goulder 2 for 28.
