South Yorkshire Steam Coal Trade and Traffic with Hull

The steam coal trade being the only branch of the trade in which there is much business doing in this district, some little interest naturally centres in the traffic with Hull, which takes so large a quantity from South Yorkshire.

The return for six months shows that 611,920 tons were sent to Hull, as against 604,916 in the same period of last year. The last month’s traffic was 105,728 tons, against 110,512 in the previous corresponding month.

Denaby Main last month had 11,848 tons accredited to it, against 14,272 tons in the same period of last year. Wharncliffe Silkstone sent 1,976 tons, against 3,408 tons in the previous year; Wombwell Main, 232 tons against 1,336 tons; Carlton Main, 1,912 tons against 2,432 tons; so that there is a considerable falling off from these South Yorkshire pits.

The West Riding Silkstone Collieries sent 4,688 tons, against 4,424 tons the previous corresponding month; and Whitwood 3,920 tons against 7,504 tons last year.

It is matter of regret that the Hull and Barnsley works should be stopped at the present time, for they were very near the junction with the other companies’ lines at Stairfoot, Monk Bretton, and Cudworth, and several collieries had made arrangements in respect of it.
