Wrote Letter Then Killed

Mexborough Guardsman’s Fate

Guardsman John Wheeler (27), son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Wheeler, of 39, West Road, Mexborough, wrote to his parents from the Central Mediterranean theatre of war on September 25th saying he was all right.

Later the same day he went into battle and was killed. His parents received his cheerful letter, and this week had notification from the War Office of his being killed in action on September 25th.

Guardsman Wheeler had been in the Army three years, and was previously a miner at Barnburgh. He was unmarried.

An officer of his unit, Lieut. C. Lloyd, has written to his parents: “He is much missed by all of us, and we would like to let you know how we feel for you in losing such a son.”
