Killed In Action

News has been received by Mr. and Mrs. G. Mawbey, of 8 Eden Terrace, that their son Pte. Walter Mawbey, of the York and Lancaster Regiment, has been killed in action with the Mediterranean Forces.

The intimation states that Pte. Mawbey was killed on September 23rd. He joined the Territorials on the outbreak of war and prior to joining up was employed as apprentice compositor at Messrs. Venables Ltd., Mexborough.

Mrs. Mawby has received a letter from Major R. Elmhirst, under whom her son was serving, in which he states that he had recommended Pte. Mawby for the Military Medal.

Major Elmhirst stated that Pte. Mawby was “one of the finest and bravest men I ever met, and cannot be replaced. There is only one saving grace, he died instantaneously and without pain, During the African campaign he was first-class and I put him in for the Military Medal.  I only hope he gets it, although now posthumously, as he certainly deserved a decoration.”
