South Yorkshire Times – Saturday 30 October 1943

Killed In Action.

Three days after writing a letter home saying that he was fit and well, L/Cpl. Jack Hulse, a Coldstream Guardsman, was killed in action while serving in the Central Mediterranean theatre.

L/Cpl. Hulse, who was 32, was a reservist, and rejoined the Coldstream Guards on the outbreak of war. He was sent out to Egypt in the early days of the war, and had seen service with the famous Eighth Army throughout the North African campaign.

He leaves a widow and one daughter, who reside at 7 Belmont Street, Mexborough.

He met his death on Sept. 21st, and is believed to have been serving in Italy at the time.

His brother-in-law, John Greenwood, also of Mexborough, who went out to the Mediterranean a few months ago, met him three days after landing at his destination. Before the war L/Cpl. Hulse was a miner at Manvers Main Collery.
