Mentioned In Dispatches

Sgt. J. Auty of 46, Dryden Road, Mexborough, writes:

“I am very pleased to keep receiving the “South Yorkshire Times” which helps to bring memories of the old town.  I like to see the photos of local lads in your columns. You are doing a good job and the people of Mexborough really have done marvelously for the war effort. Please thank the Comforts Fund. It is nice to know they still think of us here in Italy.

I have been with the Eighth Army from El Alamein to Tunisia.  I was very surprised to meet an old school pal of mine in the desert, called Jack Walsh who lives in Mexborough.  When the North Africa campaign was finished, our next job was Salerno. We have covered some ground since then, seeing Naples, Rome, Florence etc.

It appeared on our orders the other day that three pals of mine and myself had been mentioned in dispatches for gallant and distinguished service. We now wear the oak leaf next to the Africa star. I have met many Mexborough lads, Cpl. Prince, Sgt. Chambers Gnr. William Shaw and Harold Buxton.”
