Home from Ceylon
Mr. and Mrs. L. Cater of Waterworks House, Mexborough, received a pleasant shock on Tuesday when their only son, Signalman Leonard John Cater, (25), whose wife lives at 168, Hirstgate, Mexborough, walked in after serving four years abroad.
Signalman Cater, who joined up in December 1939, came home almost five years to the day of his departure. He was in the Middle East for two years, serving in the first Libyan campaign, before being posted to Ceylon, where he has been serving on the edge of the jungle.
Sig. Cater said that he has been keeping a small poultry farm in Ceylon. They had a good many losses, mostly through snakes and hawks.
He always received the “South Yorkshire Times” regularly and although there were only three Yorkshiremen in the whole unit, and none from South Yorkshire, everyone liked to read it.
He wears the ribbon of the Africa Star.
