Mexborough Sailor Believed Drowned
Serving In “Calypso”
A 20-year-old Mexborough sailor has been posted missing, believed drowned, following the sinking of the British cruiser H.M.S. Calypso, by an Italian submarine in the Mediterranean. He is Ordinary Seaman Edward Eric Dorman, youngest son of Mrs. and the late Mr. B. Dorman, of 27, Grenfell Avenue, Mexborough. Although Mrs. Dorman has not heard any further news since she received a telegram from the Admiralty on Saturday stating that her son was missing, believed drowned, she told the ” Times ” that she had not yet given up hope for his safety.
Edward joined the Navy a year ago, before which he was employed as a haulage hand at Barnburgh Main Colliery.
He was born at Mexborough and educated at Dolcliffe Road School. He was formerly a member of Mexborough Cycling Club. His father, the late Mr. Bertie Dorman, was a private in the York and Lancs. in the last war and served for three years in Salonika. He died three years after the war.
