Promoted Captain

Following his return to this country a few months ago after service in India, Greece, Crete, and North Africa, Lt. A. Hanby, a native of Mexborough, has been promoted Captain and has been transferred to the R.E.M.E.

Captain Hanby joined the R.A.S.C. in February 1920, at the age of 19, serving with the occupation forces in Cologne for two years, and a further 3 years in Egypt, where he returned in 1936 to help train the Egyptian Army, reaching the rank of Mechanical Staff Sergeant. Posted to Palestine when war broke out, he went from there to Greece, was evacuated from Greece to Crete and again from Crete when that island fell. He and a nephew escaped when Tobruk fell.

Captain Hanby, whose home is in London, is a member of the Mexborough branch of the British Legion.
