Well-Known Mexboro’ Tennis Player
News has been received of the death in India of a well-known Mexborough lawn tennis player, Cpl. Pinder Clarkson.
A letter from the Signals Record Office on Saturday informed Mrs. Clarkson, of 17, King’s Road, Mexborough, that her husband, who was serving in the Royal Corps of Signals, had died in India on July 19th. The letter gave no indication as to the cause of death, but stated that further news would follow.
Cpl. Clarkson had been in India for about two years and had seen active service on the Burma front. He was well-known in the district, particularly as a tennis player. He held the men’s singles championship of Mexborough and District Lawn Tennis Association in 1937 and 1939 and was a member of the Mexborough club’s team which won the first division of the Sheffield League early in 1939. He was formerly a prominent member of Mexborough Athletic Club’s tennis section.
By trade, Cpl. Clarkson was a joiner and latterly he worked with Mr. R. Bennett, of Mexborough. He was a member of the Special Constabulary at Mexborough.
Mrs. Clarkson is on the teaching staff of Park Road Infants’ School, Mexborough.
