Obituary – Annie Waddington

The death occurred on Sunday of Mrs. Annie Waddington, Beaconsfield House, Market Street, Mexboro’, in her 88th year.  She had resided 60 years in the town, and was a native of Marton, Lincolnshire, the widow of Mr. Henry Waddington, founder of a well-known firm of auctioneers.

Mrs. Waddington had always taken a keen interest in the social life of the district, and in her younger days was responsible for organising dances for charitable objects. Her husband was an enthusiastic Conservative, and following the election of a party candidate, Mrs. Waddington organised a celebration ball attended by Lord Fitzwilliam (then Lord Milton) and other members of the great families in the neighbourhood.

Until recently Mrs. Waddington was actively interested in the Parish Church and a generous supporter of its enterprises.  She was also a good friend of the Montagu Hospital.

In spite of her great age Mrs. Waddington was very active until a recent severe attack of bronchitis.  Her husband died nineteen years ago, and she leaves a daughter (Mrs. Huey, wife of Dr. J. J. Huey, of Mexboro’) and two sons Messrs. Peter and Frank Waddington.  Two other sons died serving their country, Harry in the South African War and William in the European War.
