Obituary
Mrs. Walter Turner
Pioneer of the “South Yorkshire Times”
We greatly regret to record the death, which occurred last Sunday at her home, 10, Vernon Road, Bridlington, of Mrs. Eliza Turner, widow of Mr. Walter Turner, the founder and proprietor of the “Mexborough and Swinton Times,” now the “South Yorkshire Times.”
Mrs. Turner, who had just passed her 77th birthday, was remarkably hale and active up to a few months ago, when her health gradually failed.
Mrs. Turner was a native of Mexborough, a daughter of the late Mr. Richard Elliott, who was in business in the town and district for many years as a watchmaker and jeweller.
She married Mr. Walter Turner at a time when he was a hard-working young newsagent, keen, ambitious, and already laying plans for the foundation of the present newspaper and printing business. Throughout her married life she took the keenest interest in the business and the greatest pride in its development and success. While she remained in the district she was a frequent and always welcome visitor to the offices of the newspaper took the kindliest interest in the staff.
On the retirement of her husband from active direction of the newspaper and printing works, he and Mrs. Turner removed to Brookfield House. Swinton, and afterwards to Bramley Park, Rotherham, finally settling about fifteen years ago at Bridlington, where Mr. Turner died on July 9th, 195, his wife’s birthday. There are still many people l in the Mexbro’ district who remember Mrs. Walter Turner with kindness and respect.
