Obituary – George Bennett.

The death occurred on Frida at 3, Cowper Road, Mexborough, of Mr. George Bennett, aged 82, who was extremely well known throughout the district.

He was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. James Bennett, of Old Denaby, who was for many years general overseer of that parish and churchwarden. Mr. Bennett was born in a cottage then situated at the top of Ferry Boat Lane.

In 1886 Mr. Bennett took over the licence of the Ferry Boat which he held for about 40 years and at the time of his retirement he held the distinction of being the, oldest licensee in the district.

Mr. Bennett was also welt known in his associations with agriculture and for many years he farmed acres of land which were attached to the Ferry Boat Inn. On many occasions he officiated as judge at ploughing matches, competitions and in horses and cattle.

In his younger days he was generally among the prize winners as a showman.

The interment took place at Mexborough cemetery on Monday, the Rev. E. B. A. Somerset officiating.
