Burglary in Wath Road
On Thursday morning, about 5 p.m. Mr. Lee, grocer, at Wath-road, Mexborough , on coming downstairs, was astonished to find everything in great disorder, and all around were traces that thieves had been very busy.
Entrance had been effected by the breaking of a pane in a back window. Two watches and three guards, value about £8, are missing out of a box and also a five shilling piece. The numbers of the watches are known.
The family retired to rest at 11p.m., so operations mast have commenced at once. The visitors took matters very coolly and helped themselves to a good supply of beer (of which there was plenty in the cellar, Mr. Leo having an off-license). They also helped themselves to a bread loaf, some pork, and likewise absorbed a pint of milk. Fortunately the shop was locked, therefore the thieves had to confine their attention to the house. An attempt was also made to enter the Plant Hotel by the frost cellar, but an inner door blocked their progress.
Police-constable Hewitt found that the door had been lifted. Strange to state the intruders were never heard or seen by anyone in the district. The police have the case in hand.
