Olympia’s Successful Week-End
Withernsea Cup Problem
Olympia turned out three teams last Thursday and all were successful in recording victories. Although the first team’s win over Warrington, on their own rink, in the semi-final of the Manchester Free Gazette Cup was the most important, greatest credit must be given to the inexperienced Palace side who visited Louth and overcame a previously unbeaten side by the odd goal in five. The Flyers, engaged in the Withernsea Cup, found easy victims in East Yorkshire Riding service and the score of 11-0 no more than indicated their superiority.
The best individual performance was accompanied by Willis Beaumont, who according to reports played the game of his career, and was responsible for the first five goals. As I stated in these notes last week, Beaumont can be depended upon to give of his best when there is anything at stake and with Willis playing like he is at present and all the other members of the side enjoying a splendid period.
Olympia are looking forward with confidence to their two meetings with Manchester Cheetham Hill, one in the National cup (semi-final) and the other in the Manchester Cup (final) Olympia’s other four goals at Warrington were obtained by R. Johnson, who gave another sparkling exhibition. The manager in which Beaumont and G. Johnson deceived the Warrington defenders was delightful to watch and a very pleasing feature of Olympia’s display was the manner in which they varied their methods of attack. Beaumont got a couple of goals within three minutes of the start, and had added three more before Warrington realised that most danger would come from this source. All attention was at once concentrated on Beaumont, who immediately saw that he would be given little scope and the ball was set to G Johnson as often as possible. He made full use of the opportunities provided and earned every one of the four goals.
