Mexborough
Mr. J. H. White is a native of Mexborough, educated at Pitt Street and the National schools.
He commenced working at Waddington’s glassworks, and later went to Barron’s. At the age of 17, on the death of his father, the late Mr. R. White, he took over a general furnishing business at 60, Bank Street, where he now resides. Later he became the pioneer of “funeral reform” and has worked up an extensive funeral directing business.
In his early days he was known throughout the country as a champion cyclist and an expert at many other sports, especially boxing.
He was asked to allow himself to be nominated as long as 20 years ago, but felt he lacked experience.
