New Council Chairman At Mexborough
Coun. Reg Bell has become the second Citizens’ Association councillor to be elected chairman of Mexborough Urban Council. Coun. Bell, a Kilnhurst Collier electrician, took over from retiring chairman Coun. Willetts at the annual meeting on Wednesday.
Coun. Willetts expressed his gratitude to all the organisations in the town which had welcomed him during his year of office, and to the community as a whole.
He was thanked for his work by Coun. Bell and by Couns. Hurst, Johnson and R. H. Haigh. Coun. Bell spoke of the “challenge that lies ahead” for Mexborough and the opportunities that must be taken to make Mexborough the “hub of South Yorkshire.”
Coun. Alwyn Martin was elected vice-chairman of the Council and committee chairman for the coming year will be Coun. S. Taylor (Public Health), Coun. B. Cooke (Parks and Burials), Coun. J. Batty (Public Hall and Entertainments), Coun. A. Martin (Highways, Markets and Public Lighting), Coun. R. Bell (General Purposes No 1), Coun. K. Jobson (Housing) and Coun. J. C. Willetts (Finance).
