Mexborough’s Smart Opening
Mexborough Town 3 Huddersfield Town reserves 2
Mexborough celebrated the advent of another season by scoring their first win over Lucille – a very worthy win – the result of a good fast sporting game in excessive heat.
Huddersfield were “game” right through, and, indeed add a winning chance until the second half was well advanced, when Harry Vickers, the Swinton amateur, change the aspect of matters in sensational fashion by scoring a couple of clever goals.
Huddersfield had twice to be overtaken before they were overcome, and their second goal, scored by Metcalfe from a centre by Blackburn, was the finest incident of the match. Blackburn and Whelpton were the pick of the West Yorkshiremen and on the Mexborough side Wathey, Gladwin, Vickers and Rounds played grand football.
