‘Outward Bound’ Expedition
Mexboro’ Student Going To Foula
A tiny island in the Shetlands, occupied by 75 crofters and large colonies of seabirds, is the destination of Mexborough student Michael Binch, who will be among a party of ten youths chosen from all over England for an “Outward Bound” expedition in August.
Michael, an 18-years-old Central Electricity Generating Board employee, was chosen after his efforts on a similar course last year. The expedition lasts 19 days, a fortnight of which will be spent on Foula.
Michael, of Crossgates, told the “South Yorkshire Times” this week: “I am really looking forward to it, not only because it will be the first time I have left the mainland but because it should be an extremely interesting experience.”
Two instructors from Braithey Hall School, Ambleside, will be in charge of the party. Among their activities on Foula – three miles by two – will be ringing Skuas, and they will undertake other ornithological research, field-work and archaeology
Michael, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Binch, is an apprentice technical staff engineer and is at present taking a “sandwich” course at Rotherham Technical College. A keen footballer during his days at Mexborough Grammar School, he has also played for Mexborough Youth Centre
